the Master

New Testament writers often referenced Jesus as “Master.”

In Luke 5:5 Simon (Peter) says to Jesus

Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”

In Luke 8:24 as a storm rose while he and the disciples were on a boat, fearing for their safety, they said to Jesus,

Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm.”

John referred to Him as Master in Luke 9:49 when he said,

Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.”

The Master

Other references are (2 Peter 2:1 Jude 1:4)

Jesus Christ is our master, more than in the context of an arrived, complete or consummate model being. He is also our master in the context that He is our Lord. There is submission, not only a teacher to student submission, but a bond–servant devoted and sold–out to a master, or a subject to a King.

A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.”

Luke 6:40
